Sepia-toned photograph attributed to Karl Lagerfeld (1933–2019): a theatrically lit eighteenth-century interior, with a fall of silk drapery, a classical urn on a commode, and above it Philippe de Champaigne’s Saint Jerome in the Wilderness. The Champaigne belonged to Lagerfeld himself: bought at Christie’s London in December 1992, it was sold with his Old Master paintings at Christie’s New York on 23 May 2000. The photograph therefore shows his own collection in place, between 1993 and the framing date of February 1995. Lagerfeld photographed his eighteenth-century interiors himself. Framed by Paris American Art, 2 rue Bonaparte, Paris, their label dated February 1995 is on the reverse. Other photographs from the same collection, including signed examples by Lagerfeld, are framed identically by this firm. France, c. 1993–95.
