Art & Design - Peter Woodward
A rare and historically significant collection of 54 items saved from the London studio of Jim Dine at 60 Chester Square in 1971. The material was rescued from disposal at the request of the artist’s landlady, Princess Sylvia Guirey (née Obolensky/Astor), and carefully stored until its rediscovery in 2012.
The group represents a pivotal moment in Dine’s London years during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It includes working sketches for print blocks, annotated studies, photographs, letters and postcards, together with poems and manuscripts personally dedicated to the artist by Adrian Henri and Ron Padgett.
In addition to works on paper, the collection contains studio artefacts — paintbrushes, pencils and materials used in the creation of Dine’s artworks — offering a rare insight into the physical and intellectual environment of the artist during his London period.
Eighteen items are presented in white gallery box frames, six are mounted on steel plinths, and the remaining works are housed in one of Dine’s original portfolios, itself decorated with sketches and writing in the artist’s own hand.
The rediscovery of the material was noted by Colin Gleadell in The Telegraph, describing it as a remarkable survival from a defining moment in the artist’s career.
