Roger Capron (1922–2006) was one of the defining French ceramicists of the mid-twentieth century, synonymous with the post-war Vallauris pottery scene. Born in Vincennes and trained at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris (1939–1943), he settled in Vallauris in 1946 and co-founded l'Atelier Callis with Robert Picault and Jean Derval. In 1952 he established his own workshop, going on to produce the tiled coffee tables, vide poches, wall pockets and decorated bottles for which he is now best known. His recurring motifs — stylised suns, branches, fish, birds, and the geometric Garrigue patterns — are instantly recognisable to collectors of mid-century French design. Capron's work was exhibited internationally and is held in the collections of the Musée National de Céramique at Sèvres and the Musée Magnelli in Vallauris.
