Jo Brenneis
Ohne Titel, 1954
Gouache on paper
Signed “Jobrenn”
42.5 × 61 cm
A vibrant abstract composition executed in 1954, a pivotal year in Jo Brenneis’s development as a leading figure in post-war German abstraction. The work combines biomorphic forms with a carefully structured picture plane, revealing Brenneis’s distinctive balance between spontaneity and control.
Strongly influenced by the legacy of Paul Klee and Joan Miró, Brenneis’s works of the early 1950s are characterised by lively colour relationships, animated linear elements and a playful yet disciplined approach to abstraction. Ohne Titelbelongs to this highly regarded period, produced shortly before the artist’s later relief and incised paintings.
The work is illustrated in the artist’s monographic catalogue Jo Brenneis: Leben und Werk (cat. no. 181) and carries the estate inventory number Nachlass-Verzeichnis Nr. 0296. Works from this period are particularly sought after for their clarity, freshness and importance within the evolution of post-war European modernism.
