Jo Brenneis
Komposition 54, 1954
Gouache on paper
Signed and dated “Jobrenneis 54”
43 × 61 cm
Executed in 1954, Komposition 54 is a confident abstract work from Jo Brenneis’s most important post-war period, when he fully articulated his mature visual language. The composition is structured through interlocking geometric planes and rhythmic linear elements, balanced by a lively and intuitive use of colour.
The work reflects Brenneis’s close engagement with the legacy of Paul Klee and Joan Miró, evident in the segmented picture plane, animated surface textures and the tension between order and spontaneity. The palette—cool blues and greens offset by warmer reds, ochres and violets—is characteristic of his early-1950s works on paper, widely regarded as the most refined and resolved of his career.
Komposition 54 belongs to a significant group of gouaches produced prior to Brenneis’s later relief and incised paintings, and is illustrated in the artist’s monographic catalogue Jo Brenneis: Leben und Werk (cat. no. 188). The work carries the estate inventory number Nachlass-Verzeichnis Nr. 0304. Examples from this period are particularly sought after for their clarity, freshness and importance within the development of post-war German abstraction.
