PAL (Jean de Paleologue, 1860-1942)
EUSKAL-JAI, PARISIEN
lithograph in colours, c.1895, printed by Paul Dupont, Paris, a few small tears in the margins, mounted on stretched canvas. This poster puts us right into the action of the Basque national sport of jai-alai (“Euskal” is Basque for “Basque”). Pal places us directly behind the dynamically poised player, preparing to scoop and hurl the pelota (the parchment skin-covered ball that can travel in excess of 180 mph) into play with his xistera (a wicker basket glove that measures approximately twenty-six inches in length).
